On May 8, under the Elite Engineers Program led by Professor Liu Zhiyuan of our School, the candidate successfully completed the defense based on practical achievements, becoming the first graduating professional master’s degree student outside special programs in China to apply for a master’s degree through this pathway.
Our School, in collaboration with Nanjing Urban Construction Group, has carried out industry-university-research cooperation on intelligent urban road maintenance, resulting in a high-quality interdisciplinary practical achievement entitled “Development and Application of an Intelligent Road Inspection System Based on Radar-Vision Fusion.” After rigorous evaluation, the defense committee unanimously concluded that the practical achievement of Yang Shiqi, a master’s student from the School of Instrument Science and Engineering, has important theoretical significance and engineering application value, and approved her defense.

“Data Empowerment for Complex Intelligent Systems” is an Elite Engineers Program led by Professor Liu Zhiyuan of our School. Spearheaded by our School, the program brings together the School of Transportation, the School of Instrument Science and Engineering, the School of Computer Science and Engineering, and the School of Cyber Science and Engineering. It has also established long-term partnerships with Jiangsu Communications Holding Co., Ltd., Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., Nanjing Urban Construction Investment Holding (Group) Co., Ltd., and Deji Group Co., Ltd., forming a collaborative framework with complementary strengths.
Grounded in statistics and data science, the program deeply integrates artificial intelligence with engineering practice. It represents both a disciplinary mission to support the development of Southeast University’s “Double First-Class” construction and advance the frontiers of science and technology, and a key pathway to serve major national strategic needs and cultivate “Data Science + AI + Elite Engineers” talent. By addressing core challenges in data governance, intelligent decision-making, and engineering implementation in complex systems, the program will provide a core driving force for the intelligent upgrading of transportation, industry, the internet, and other fields.

Relying on the Elite Engineers Program for professional degree postgraduates, our School has continued to deepen the university-enterprise joint training model. It encourages an increasing number of engineering master’s and doctoral students to engage with real enterprise scenarios, conduct research based on practical scientific and technological projects, produce substantive engineering achievements, and apply for degrees on this basis. In doing so, the School is gradually exploring a full-process reform pathway featuring “project-based enrollment, university-enterprise joint training, enterprise-based student practice, and degree applications based on practical achievements,” while continuously building a new talent training model for elite engineers under the framework of “Data Science + X.”
